Data Sonification Workshop

2:00 pm - 5:00 pm

Location

Classroom 9

Join David Ibbett, Resident Composer at the Center for Astrophysics | Harvard & Smithsonian and Assistant Professor at WPI, to discover the art and science of sonification – the art of translating data into sound.

David is the composer of Black Hole and Mars Symphonies and the Director of Multiverse Concert Series, and employs the technique of sonification as a powerful tool for connecting with audiences. David will perform live-composed sonifications, before breaking down how composers can use these techniques in their work.

Learn how spectra from galaxies can be translated into harmonies, nebula topologies into lyrical melodies, and Mars samples into orchestrations. After the presentation, David will conduct a workshop on sonification, inviting all to experiment with the techniques in a hands-on format. Participants will need a license or trial of Max MSP software.
